Mendip Calligraphy Group
About the group
Activities
Mendip Calligraphy Group was formed in 1990, the membership now ranges
from complete beginners to professional calligraphers.
Our aim is to increase understanding and appreciation of the art of calligraphy
and to provide the opportunity for members to develop their individual
skills and interests through regular workshops.
Members are kept in touch with the activities of the Group and informed
of exhibitions and events with a regular newsletter. The Group also mounts
an exhibition of members work every two year's in June in Burrington's Parish Room.
Meetings
There
are two regular workshops a month, one on Tuesday
at the new Village Hall (previously WI Hall) in Shipham from 9.30am
to 2.30pm and one on Saturday at the
Parish Room, Burrington, from 10am to 4pm. These
workshops are for calligraphers of any ability, from beginners to experts,
and are led by Teresa Dunstone, our tutor, who is approved by the Society
of Scribes and Illuminators. Coffee/tea are provided but please bring
a packed lunch.
The Group also arranges specialised workshops during the year which are
taken by professional calligraphers of national (and often of international)
repute.
Membership
The annual subscription is £9.50 per year and falls due on 1st
September. Your membership card entitles you to discounts at:
- The Arts Centre Weston-super-Mare (supplies and framing)

their discount cards, freely available from Andrew)
- 370 Gallery, Cleeve (framing)

Booking procedure
In order that the tutor can give of her best to each individual, classes
are limited to twelve students at Burrington and ten at Shipham (the hall
is smaller).
To ensure that sufficient numbers will be attending (and to make sure
of a place - the workshops are very popular), bookings need to be made,
and paid for, in advance (£15 for Burrington, £13 for Shipham.)
Cheques made payable to Mendip Calligraphy Group.
Bookings are usually made in person at the workshops. If this is not
possible, however, phone the secretary (Andrew) to check on availability.
If a class is full your name will be put onto a waiting list, if there
are enough people an extra class will be arranged. Failing this you will
be given priority at the next class.
If you cannot come to a class one month and wish to book for the following
month your booking will be accepted, however, you can only book for one
class in advance.
