Hotwells Howlers
About the group

Description and activities

We are a group of friends who met through a mutual interest in folk music.

We have been playing and singing together for many years, and became known as the ‘Hotwells Howlers because we rehearse in the ‘Nova Scotia’ pub in Hotwells, not because of our manner of performance!

We sing and play mostly English traditional folk music. A few more modern songs in the idiom have crept in, and a couple of hymns from the West gallery tradition of village quires are sung for the enjoyment of four-part harmony!

We perform groups of songs mostly relating to the agricultural seasons, and ranging from traditional local village carols to the lively celebration of springtime and the boisterous harvest festival. We can mix and match our repertoire to suit the occasion.

We enjoy our music hugely and hope to introduce our audiences to the same enjoyment of our native tradition

The Nova Scotia pub Cumberland Basin, Hotwells.

Other

We can be hired for parties, harvest festivals, etc. and charge about £50 depending on the event.

We do not spend our fee in riotous living, but wait till we have a nice round sum and then donate it to charity. We are especially drawn to cancer charities as a very dear friend and colleague who was in the group when we started, died from this condition shortly after. We have £350 in the bank at the moment and hope to make it £500 by the summer.
